We know this is a disturbing image, and we’re sorry for those of you who are disgusted. Trust us, we are too. But in our defense, it was a social occasion so we HAD to eat. We did split a veggie burger and a salad though, and it wasn’t our fault the damned kitchen staff added a heaping pile of tater tots, which, to our credit, we couldn’t even finish. But maybe that was because we were loaded up on alcohol. Either way…

So I’m throwing caution to the wind – no face mask, hand washing or newly developed vaccines for me. Just a couple of crossed fingers and a lot of wishful thinking.

A friend and avid reader submitted the following for the second installment of What Would Skinny Lady Do?

Dear Skinny Lady,

Would it be a good idea to post a picture of myself in a bathing suit on Facebook in the hopes that several people might post comments like “You sure have a nice body”? I was thinking that if enough people responded that way, I might find the inner peace, fulfillment, and self-worth that it has been the goal of my body dysmorphic disorder to achieve. The risks might include no one responding and the possibility that even if they did, one day later I would say to myself, “Well, yeah, I looked okay in that picture, but now I’m a fleshy gob.” What would Skinny Lady do?

Emaciated Lady and I have differing opinions on this, so I’m going to post both and you can decide for yourself which of us is the wiser. In my experience, Facebook can do wonders for the ego. It’s the perfect forum for superficiality, particularly the kind that revolves around personal appearances. Post a great profile picture, and you’ll get a slew of comments on how great you look. This is especially true if you were an ugly duckling or just plain awkward in high school. There’s no better way to say “FUCK YOU” to all those high school assholes than by looking fabulous 10-20 years later. So my opinion is that the benefits outweigh the risks. Even if you only get one compliment, that’s one more than you’d have if you do nothing at all. Plus, if you post a picture in which you look ugly or fat, you can rest assured that I’ll tell you to remove it immediately.

Emaciated Lady, on the other hand, has the opposite opinion. She says:

I advise against posting any photos of yourself in a bathing suit unless you’re a working model. The fact is, if your body is that good, people would be too jealous to comment. And if it’s not, then you’re facing shame and embarassment in front of your peers. Instead, you might want to hang up a black and white photo (it’s more slimming) of yourself on your fridge to dissuade you from eating.

Please note: The opinions stated here are merely that – opinions. And our opinions are worth less than most, so take our advice at your own risk.

“My face looks fat in that picture.” When I say things like this, I’m not expecting someone to contradict me because, in truth, even if you think I’m skinny, I’m still going to think I’m fat. It’s more of an observation, an exclamation even. My husband has heard these words a million times, so when I said them today, he just kept his mouth shut. My mom, on the other hand, of all the possible responses she could have made (including no response at all, which is always the most preferable), said: I’m going to throw you away.

Thanks, Mom. I love you too.
